From Rudy Rios

Hello, I'm Rudy Ríos, brother of María Ríos. I'm raising funds to send her body back to her country of origin. We also need help finding and hiring a lawyer so that whoever did this to my sister is held accountable.

Whitestown, IN — Our community is in mourning after the heartbreaking loss of Maria Florinda Rios Perez, a hardworking mother of four and beloved neighbor. Maria was tragically shot and killed Wednesday morning on Maize Lane after mistakenly arriving at the wrong address for work—a moment of confusion that ended in unimaginable loss.

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Maria went to what she believed was her scheduled cleaning location. She and her husband were preparing to begin their day when the tragedy occurred. Speaking through a translator, her husband shared the horror of realizing they had gone to the wrong home—an innocent mistake that turned a quiet morning into a devastating nightmare.

Maria leaves behind four children, from under one year old to 17. Her husband and family are reeling, their world turned upside down as they confront an unthinkable grief.

Neighbors and community members have expressed overwhelming sadness, describing Maria as “a hardworking woman who wanted only to care for her family” and “a gentle soul taken too soon.” Many have rallied with prayers, meals, and donations to support the family during this dark time.

Those who knew Maria remember her kindness, humility, and strength. She worked tirelessly to support her loved ones, often taking extra jobs to give her children a better life. Friends and coworkers recall her warm smile, her laughter, and her constant willingness to help others—even when times were hard.

As the investigation continues, community leaders are urging compassion, understanding, and unity. Maria’s death is a painful reminder of how quickly life can change—and of the need for empathy and patience in everyday interactions.

A candlelight vigil is being planned to honor Maria’s life, love, and legacy—a chance for friends, neighbors, and even strangers to stand together against senseless violence.

Messages of support continue to pour in. One tribute reads:

“Maria was just doing her job—working hard for her children. She didn’t deserve this. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.”

Maria’s life, though cut far too short, will continue to shine in the memories of those who loved her. Her legacy lives on in her children, in her kindness, and in the love she shared so freely.

Rest in peace, Maria Florinda Rios Perez— devoted mother, loving wife, and beautiful soul whose light will never fade.
