My life took an unexpected turn in 2012 when I set out on a routine 40-50 mile bike ride outside San Antonio with a friend. Tragically, an 82-year-old motorist was operating a heavy-duty truck at 55-mph, struck me from behind. The impact sent me flying 30 feet, landing on my back, and resulting in a severe L1 burst fracture. In that moment, I was paralyzed from the waist down and, though I couldn’t recall the details of the crash, I vividly remember the deafening sound of the impact, followed by darkness. I was told I wouldn’t walk again but I knew in my heart I would one day.

Driven by a desire to make a difference, I founded The Now You See Me Foundation in 2015, three years after my cycling accident. The mission was twofold: to inspire individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) and athletes who have sustained disabling injuries while training. Over the years, I’ve provided significant financial support to injured cyclists. By 2021, my focus expanded to spinal cord research and over the last couple of years, we’ve contributed towards UTHealth’s first ever Spinal Cord Research project called the “Power Step Initiative” aimed to help those with spinal injuries regain mobility. Currently, we are raising funds for a Pediatric version of UT Health's Power Step. We would love to have your support for a better future for children twelve and under.

My Foundation has made significant strides. I organize and fundraise for two major events each year. The first is usually held in the Spring. We are currently prepping for our 12th Annual Monica’s Mile (MM), which is a one-hour or one-mile swim challenge hosted at the University of the Incarnate Ward Natatorium in San Antonio, TX. on Sunday, May 18th. The second and primary fundraiser, is our Annual Monster Dash Run, Walk, or Roll, scheduled for Sunday October 26th, at lovely Comanche Park. We'd love to have you participate or volunteer at these events. Visit nowyouCme.org for more information.

Thank you for your generous support.
