Fibroids Research and Black Women's Voices

Research shows that fibroids affect nearly 80% of Black women by age 50, yet the psychological, emotional, and spiritual toll of this condition remains largely invisible. While medical approaches often treat fibroids as purely physical, the lived experiences of Black women reveal a much deeper story. One that involves the body, the psyche, and history itself.

As a third-year doctoral student in Depth Psychology and Integrative Healing Practices, I am conducting original research on womb trauma in Black women, focusing specifically on the emotional and psychological impact of fibroids. This work seeks to illuminate how racialized stress, intergenerational trauma, cultural silence, and medical neglect shape the lived experience of fibroids and how these embodied wounds are often carried quietly, without adequate recognition or care.

By using a depth psychological lens, I aim to explore not just what hurts, but why it hurts and how healing may emerge when we attune to the wisdom of the body and the messages of the unconscious. This research honors Black women’s stories as sacred texts. Stories that deserve to be heard, felt, and held with reverence. It invites us to name what has been hidden and work to heal what has been held in silence for generations.

Your contribution will help fund participant stipends, transcription software, and the development of a culturally responsive screening tools for womb trauma in Black women designed to be piloted in women’s health clinics and hospitals. This support will also advance advocacy efforts for policy change and the integration of culturally sensitive screening tools to address this critical health disparity.
